I am currently designing in-rack sprinkler protection for an area containing oil storage which falls under NFPA 30 (08ed). One of the requirements is 16.6.1.5 which states "If there are adjacent rack bays that are not dedicated to storage of liquids, the barrier and in-rack sprinkler protection shall extend at least 8 ft beyond the area devoted to liquid storage. In addition, adjacent racks across the aisles on each side of the liquid storage shall be protected in accordance with 16.6.1." 16.6.1 is the fire protection design scheme for the in-racks and barriers. I take this to mean that we need to extend the liquid storage criteria 8ft beyond the actual liquid storage in the same rack and provide the same liquid storage protection criteria in adjacent racks on both sides of the rack containing the storage even though no liquid storage will take place. The owner asked me if we only had to extend the protection 8ft within the rack, why would we need protection in the adjacent racks if the the aisles are 11ft wide? He made a good point and the only answer I could give him was that it is in the code. Am I interpreting the fire protection requirements right? Is there a distance for the aisle width in which sprinklers would not be required for adjacent racks? Thanks, Dewayne _______________________________________________ Sprinklerforum mailing list http://lists.firesprinkler.org/mailman/listinfo/sprinklerforum For Technical Assistance, send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
