John - If the main is metallic, I think a the use of a electro-magnetic detector with a tracer signal generator on the stub up would work. An electro-magnetic detector is standard equipment for most utility locator services (one-call services). If PVC main, then I think you'd have to get a locator service to use ground penetrating radar (GPR), which has limitations.
