Our Northeast Florida Chapter of SFPE had a joint training day with our local fire department this past Thursday. It's something we started doing to work with our local firefighters to see how they actually use building FP systems, to learn what design mistakes they often see, and generally get the design community together with the end users. We are a little bit unusual in that Jacksonville is really spread out (biggest city in the country land-wise) and as a result, we have a huge fire department which is disproportionate to our population with 55 fire stations, 1,200 firefighters, etc.
Our local fire chief discussed sprinkler saves and I thought I would pass along the information. He said that they arrive to at least one sprinkler save per month - usually in apartments. They just shut off the control valve, replace the sprinkler and squeegee up the water. Almost all of them are extinguished with one sprinkler. They are really high on sprinklers and were strong advocates of having more systems. Just wanted to pass along some good news, Steve Kowkabany, P.E.
