Todd, We have an all-paid local FD with no volunteer departments. Like I said, it is a really unusual situation because the city and county are consolidated giving us a large tax base, so basically the numbers are as follows:
0.8 million people and lots of industry plus 2 navy bases 840 square miles 55 fire stations 55 pumpers 14 tankers 11 ladders 35 rescue units 1,200 emergency personnel 250 administrative personnel When you look at the ratios compared to Stonington, it looks like you guys have more stations, apparatus, etc, per capita but that is probably because it is so much smaller and the bigger cities gain an economy of scale as the departments increase in size. I'm not really sure though. You might want to call your local chief - we were surprised how eager they were to learn from us as well and it's a good relationship to develop. Good luck, Steve Kowkabany, P.E. What is the correct (or reasonable) proportion of fire stations/personnel/apparatus to population? I would assume that paid vs volunteer would make a difference. My town (Stonington, CT) has a population of 18,000 and is 42.7 square miles. Two medium sized manufacturing facilities and two tourist attractions; the rest residential. We have 6 separate (volunteer) fire stations and at least 22 pieces of apparatus. Is that reasonable? How does it compare?
