Again in Alabama we are fighting off the home builders third attempt on passing legislation to create a new state "code commission". This commission, as proposed, would have the sole authority to adopt codes for all jurisdictions in the state and no local amendments would be permitted. Additionally, the members of the commission are either homebuilders or their "friends". The fire service (including the state fire marshal) is completely left out of the process.
They are proposing this commission even through our state fire marshal has been adopting statewide building and fire codes for over 50 years. Here is these latest tactic from a posting from our state fire chiefs: Ladies and Gentlemen, SB 448 is coming up in the Governmental Affairs Committee meeting tomorrow (21 April 2009) at 10 am in room 727 in the Statehouse. It is important that we have a fire service presence in the room to discourage our Senators from dealing with this bill. The Homebuilders have been putting the pinch on Fire Chiefs around the Montgomery area by talking to the cities Mayors and having them restrict the fire services access to the Statehouse. (Homebuilders donate to local elections) Which is why it's more important now than ever for your participation. James G. Munger, Ph.D, MIFireE, CFPS KI4ZKQ James G. Munger and Associates, Inc.
