This is from the Viking model VK540 sprinkler. Hydraulic Calculation Note: To determine the number of sprinklers to calculate per branch line: Determine sprinkler spacing. (Refer to the appropriate Installation Standard and the Authority Having Jurisdiction.) Determine size of the remote area by multiplying the area of coverage per sprinkler by the number of sprinklers to be calculated (refer to the appropriate Installation Standard and the Authority Having Jurisdiction). Multiply the square root of the remote area determined in the step above by at least 1.2 and divide the product by the distance between sprinklers on the branch lines. The quotient determines the number of sprinklers to calculate per branch line. Any fractional sprinkler shall be carried to the next higher whole sprinkler.
Can also get there from NFPA 13, 2007 edition 22.4.2.2. If you have to calculate 25 sprinklers the minimum design area is 2000 square feet (80 sq feet minimum per sprinkler). The number of sprinklers to calculate on a branch line depends on the spacing pattern.
