Craig is absolutely correct. The Arch. Designs the building elements, and then the Mech. engineer determines the heat loss/gain for each element based upon what it is made of an how it is constructed and the location and orientation to the sun. This includes walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, windows and doors. They also have to input for such things as occupant load, (Body Heat) and electrical loads (watts per SF) from lighting computers or other heat producing equipment. They need to allow for the proper mix of "Fresh" air (outside air) and recirculated air based upon occupancy, add in any ventilation for things such as fume hoods or bathrooms and exhaust hoods. Then there is the inevitable "And More".
These calculations then become the "Basis of Design" for the heating and cooling. More to the point, without that engineering degree, those classes in heat transfer, and years of experience, you'd be out of luck trying this on your own. The simple answer is "Not MY Job!"
