A contractor is involved with a theater which has a sprinklered stage with standpipes as required for the size and type that it is; however, the seating area is not sprinklered. The system was installed in 1988. I have looked through the IBC, UFC and NFPA 101 and can find no requirement for the seating area, just for the stage. These codes state such things as "when the building is sprinklered", which implies a requirement from another ruling or maybe an AHJ. Can someone offer some input on this?
