War story. Looked around house full of thick, light colored, cold smoke. We
finally put the nozzle down, and looked around. Home owner had done plumbing
behind the clothes washer using the lightest , I'd guess not plumbing code
compliant, plastic pipe you could find. When the heap of clothes next the the
back of the dryer started burning, the plastic pipe deformed toward the heat
(like light bulbs sometimes do) to the point a small hole opened up. This put a
small stream of water directly on top of the heap. Fire out.

Can't remember the ignition source. So the plumber story, at a stretch, is
true.

Besides, plumbing along with decent water systems, saves many lives a year.
Cholera amd typhus are more than rare here. Sanitation saves more lives than
medicine.

Not once the plumbers highlighted the life-saving advantages of failing
solder joints.
