We have generally applied "Adjacent to mean the first protected area above and the first protected area below the concealed area. So if your concealed space in your 12 story building was between the 1st and 2nd floors the design area for only those two floors would increase to 3000 sf. Floors 3 thru 12 assuming LH could be designed to 1500 sf or less if the QR criteria were met.
For the office in a warehouse, the office itself and the ceiling/roof system above the office would require a 3000 sf design area, if the CC space is in the ceiling of the office. If the CC space is in the floor assembly of the office, say built on a concrete slab, only the office would be 3000 sf, because there would be no adjacent protected space below that. "The reason this issue was addressed is that the prior edition simply said Buildings With an Unprotected Concealed Space shall have a 3000 sf Remote Area. So if you have a 12 story building with ONE such space only on the first floor, the 12th floor still had to have a 3000 sf remote area. It was changed to say adjacent. It doesn't say HORIZONTALLY so it includes the floor above. The issue of the office within a warehouse was not discussed (and guessing where a group of 30 votes will land is often an exercise in futility) but I would think it is still applicable. Keep in mind that the area above the office is at a lower density than the rest of the warehouse (except for the 15 ft overlap) _______________________________________________ Sprinklerforum mailing list http://lists.firesprinkler.org/mailman/listinfo/sprinklerforum For Technical Assistance, send an email to: techsupp...@firesprinkler.org To Unsubscribe, send an email to:sprinklerforum-requ...@firesprinkler.org (Put the word unsubscribe in the subject field)
