Taken literally, 8.14.19.4.4 (2002 NFPA 13) prohibits piping nipples less than 1" when revamping a 3/4" outlet to a 1" drop in seismic areas. The standard does not include fittings in its 8.14.19.4.4 statement. I take it that using a 3/4" x 1" California 90 Ell fitting (90 deg. red. street elbow) to revamp a 3/4" outlet to a 1" drop is permitted in areas subject to earthquakes. Is that why its called a "California" fitting?
