The "California" ells and tee's I'm familiar with would go from 1" male
thread to either a 1" FM inlet or a 1/2" FM inlet. They differed from a Std.
street ell in that they were a longer pattern. I still have a few on the
shelf, but I don't think anyone is making them currently. The one's I have
came from Central/TYCO about 8 to 10 years ago. Unfortunately what you want
is a 3/4" male thread to avoid replacing the existing branch line tee, that
then has a 1" FM inlet. This would avoid the 3/4" nipple exclusion is a
seismic zone, because there is no 3/4" fitting exclusion.

My thoughts are this is a bit suspect as an approach, to avoid replacing
existing branch line tee's. The apparent reason to limit the nipples to 1"
is that the forces in a seismic zone are too great for a 3/4" pipe thread to
survive. Having said that the 3/4" male thread on a fitting is just as weak
or weaker than the thread on a nipple.

MY 2 cents Canadian and worth every penny.

Subject: 8.14.19.4.4 (2002 NFPA 13) and 3/4" x 1" California 90 Ell (90 deg.
red. street elbow)

Taken literally, 8.14.19.4.4 (2002 NFPA 13) prohibits piping nipples less
than 1" when revamping a 3/4" outlet to a 1" drop in seismic areas. The
standard does not include fittings in its 8.14.19.4.4 statement. I take it
that using a 3/4" x 1" California 90 Ell fitting (90 deg. red. street elbow)
to revamp a 3/4" outlet to a 1" drop is permitted in areas subject to
earthquakes. Is that why its called a "California" fitting?
