Not many responses to this one. Here is what the answer is in Seattle.

We would allow multiple high rise towers on a single property to share a
tank/pump system if the supply to each tower was NOT underground. The supply
would have to be through a utilidor or something comparable capable of
withstanding the movement expected in an earthquake, or through a common
garage, or through the connecting breezeways etc. - just not underground.

We allow the single pump/tank with auto fill as standard practice. There are
no requirements in the codes or NFPA for redundant fire pumps.

I would like to get input on the secondary water supply requirements for
high rise buildings in seismic design category C, D, E or F. I am
working on a project for a hospital that has a existing patient tower
with a secondary water supply tank and fire pump built under the 2003
International Fire Code.

The hospital wishes to build additional high riser towers (2 more) all
connected to the main hospital building, in essence still being one
building. Are additional secondary water tanks and fire pumps need for
each new high rise or can they be fed from the existing tank and pump
and still meet the intent of the code requirement?

Also, the existing design uses a 33,000 gallon underground water tank
and a vertical turbine pump. The tank uses float sensors to determine
the water level within the tank and an automatic refill system from the
city water supply. There is not a second fire pump.

Does this meet the intent, in other words are two pumps need - one for
the primary and one for the secondary water source?
