How about the system that dropped 45 PSI at our demand flow- from when the FM flow test used as basis of calc and ordering 2500 GPM diesel pump in 12~18 month time frame was performed till we did the acceptance test? Pump worked great, but what happened to the city? Eight flow tests later, and learning more than we ever wanted to about the water purveyor's lines, pumps, etc, the other reason became obvious-
Not one but TWO water bottling plants opened up in the interim, drawing a million gallons a day. One was at 50% of capacity, so the owner we worked for, prudent and conservative, had us install a 500,000 gal tank, and a higher pressure 2500 GPM pump since we were coming off a tank, not city residual. Cost impact to the owner approached a million dollars. Offered to install a smaller tank, since water supply was strong enough to offer substantial refill capability, but his response was "We're not going to solve HALF the problem. Store ALL the water we need." I love working for old-time logic that works very well, and he has the foresight and wherewithal to do what he should do- and did. We had two 1500 GPM temp rental pumps hooked up for about a week while we worked 2-12-hour shifts around the clock to replace the pump and shift to the tank supply. AHJ wouldn't allow ex pump to go off line until we ran acceptance tests on the temporary ones. Believe me, in my 4th decade in this business I am still learning and surprised sometimes. glc -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Greg McGahan Sent: Wednesday, September 23, 2009 4:20 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Inadequte Water Just fielded a question from an AHJ in a nearby community about being sued by an angry building owner that is saying the water pressure is inadequate for the sprinkler system. (Static pressure has fallen 5 psi since construction). If any of you have specific experience with a situation like this I would like to be able to help him with some stories.
