George: I am sorry to hear that story. I like the one-offs and random uniqueness from what survives in old buildings after a lifetime of use. Old and historic buildings, usually FEEL better to me than most conscious attempts at stylized newness. Narrow streets, party walls, balloon construction...they all fit together safer, and last longer, with the fire sprinkler. Old buildings have smooth edges... something I could use.
Jurisdictions and owners with Historic buildings should CHANGE their thinking and embrace the simplicity of sprinkler technology Sprinklers WILL preserve something that takes a lifetime to create. Sad news about the information we are offering, is most people simply do not change. I have heard that cardiac by-pass patients are given post-op advice such as: ' if you change your eating and exercise habits-- you will have a greater chance of living a longer life than if you maintain what brought you to our operating table. ' Nine out of ten of these patients don't change these habits. If someone's life is not enough to change them, what chance has the rationale for sprinklers to change a " non-threatened " person? This is no reason to give up the educational and preservational efforts afforded by sprinklers. It may provide reason for pausin' and recognizing the strength of the current we are paddling against. It has been said, we haven't learned something until we change our behavior. Fire sprinklers proponents are paddling against a strong stream of well mixed mumphimism, uneducated fear and jaded special interests, but at least some of us are getting a work out from the exercise. Someday, most historic buildings will be protected with fire sprinklers rather than (or in addition to) with compartmentation and voice fire alarms. Then we won't relive the lessons that losses taught us-- from Windsor Castle, to Venice's 3 opera house fires (poignantly named the Fenix), to what seems like a Parisian apartment building every 6 months, to the Montreux theater, and ...way more buildings on America soil than mention could do credit to here. scot deal excelsior fire _______________________________________________ Sprinklerforum mailing list [email protected] http://fireball.firesprinkler.org/mailman/listinfo/sprinklerforum For Technical Assistance, send an email to: [email protected] To Unsubscribe, send an email to:[email protected] (Put the word unsubscribe in the subject field)
