Chad, I think that you may be overthinking it. If the vertical obstruction is more than 18" below the deflector, you have enough room for the spray pattern umbrella to form to its full diameter. Shadowing that would occur in your example is fine, because remember, the purpose of sprinklers is to control and contain! If the sprinkler keeps the fire confined to the shadowed area by wetting combustibles around it, then its done its job.
Well wait, I just read through this section in the '07 handbook, thinking that I read something to the above effect in the explanitory text, however I can't find it now. Maybe I'm under thinking it.
