Hi Mike,

Another story was that the pilot placed additional fuel in the back
seats. Having flown a PA28-180 it would be tough to get a drum of fuel
through the door but not impossible, so perhaps add another 40-55
(250-330 lbs) gals of avgas, the equivalent of two passengers.

In any case it served as the catalyst to ignite combustible and do
significant damage to the building and at least one death (less the
pilot)

I own and fly a Piper PA28R-200. I believe the plane in the Austin
Crash was a Piper PA28-235. This airplane has the same fuselage and
wing design as my plane but is fixed gear with a slightly bigger engine.
The total maximum weight for this type of aircraft is about 2600 lbs
including fuel, pilot and passengers. Depending on the year, it would
carry a maximum of
50-75 gallons of fuel at takeoff. It's not like an airliner crashed
into this building. I could do a lot more damage with my pickup truck.

Will be interesting to see if there are any follow up comments. Designed
to handle this?....NO ......Possibility of helping to contain?
Certainly.

Subject: Austin crash

From a report on CNN, the Austin fire marshal credited the buildings
fire protection system with helping contain the damage. It would be
interesting to find out what he is talking about. A plane crashing into
a building I would think is outside the scope of what sprinklers are
designed to handle.
