I have several patient rooms in a nursing home that had a wardrobe unit
recessed in the wall and was 7 feet high. A 12" header was placed from the
top of the wardrobe unit to the existing 8 foot ceiling for cosmetic
reasons creating a concealed noncombustible space above the units. The
units were removed leaving behind a 12" deep header from the ceiling. The
fire official wants a sprinkler added in the space created by the removal of
the units, covering approx. 4 sq ft. The existing sprinklers provide
coverage into the newly created alcove from the room. Is there a specific
code reference that allows me to consider the sprinklers in the room as
providing coverage of this space or should I advise my customer he needs to
remove either the 12" headers, close off this space or add the additional
heads? Any help is appreciated.
