We have one client which requires foam-water discharge be captured. It is retained and then after the event it is pumped into tanker trucks and hauled off. You need to check with the owner or local environmental authorities to see if that is required. If available, an alternative to hauling off the waste water is to release it to a municipal sewer or to a process sewer.
I'm assuming that by your mention of a retention tank that you are providing drains in the hangar and piping them to this tank? Here is one problem. For a foam-water sprinkler system to properly work on suppressing or controlling a pool fire, the foam must be able to remain on top of the spilled fuel. If you drain it off as fast as it comes out of the sprinkler heads then it may not perform as intended. If the foam-water discharge is contained within the hangar, it can be routed to a low point sump within the hangar and then under controlled conditions allowed to discharge to a remote holding tank to be carried off in a tanker truck or to be released into a sewer system. When we have been required to provide drains they are undersized so that the foam has time to settle on the fuel before draining off. We have also had clients with special, valved drains for this same purpose. There are all kinds of ways to deal with this situation. There are many ways to retain the sprinkler discharge, either in a concrete underground tank, a lined retention pond, remote holding area, etc. Piping to these is basic plumbing design, nothing special. Just make sure the piping is suitable for the material that will be running through it. If there is any uncertainty on how to design this system I would suggest you contact a qualified mechanical and civil engineer for assistance. Craig L. There is a hangar in construction but we have no clue of how to design the plumbing system for a 2000m3 Deluge Holding / Retention Tank. There are no specific mechanical / piping details for the 2000m3 Retention Tank and how the waste (contaminated) water is taken care of. We would deeply appreciate any input to solve this issue. We look forward to hearing from you.
