Quite a few years ago I demystified the trapeze hanger rules for myself
similar to putting gravity back in to sprinkler calcs. It turns out that
section modulus=moment divided by stress. I put it on a spread sheet. The
only 'leap' from straight out of 13 it makes is from 15' between hangers to
any other distance, and for pipe trapeze member it is not limited to Sch 10
or Sch 40. It is usually not a big deal but say you have 24' bays so 12' of
pipe instead of 15'--- you might be able to get rid of the angle iron that
has been sitting in your shop for years. If you have a skeptical AHJ, any
structural engineer could say "'if per 13, x section modulus is required for
15', then for 12', y section modulus is required". (Ron, instead of the fat
guy I used a 100 pound fitter with 150 pounds of meth in her tool belt). It
is ugly and user serious instead of friendly, but if anyone wants it, just
ask--- it has been years since my last atta-boy.
