Travis, I don't exactly know how the idea got around that -13 ever had limits on velocities. I suppose it's a carryover from the FM limits of a few years ago. A local contractor who retired last year gave me all of NFPA-13's back to the '65 edition, and there is no mention of velocity of any kind, other than for flushing UG, in any of them.
Clay Claiborne wrote a long paper in '77 or '78 that explained the methods of pipe scheduling, and it's changes and so forth through the decades, but I've slept and drank since I read that in '81, so I'm not clear as to whether there were any references in that to velocities. A contact at FM told me several years ago that the limits on velocities in branch lines were their way of attempting to force larger branch line sizes in gridded systems, but he had nothing in writing to support that. That's what I know about them. Hope that helps. -- PARSLEY CONSULTING Ken Wagoner, SET 760.745.6181 voice 760.745.0537 fax [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> e-mail www.ParsleyConsulting.com <http://www.ParsleyConsulting.com> website Travis Mack, SET wrote: > Does any one know when NFPA 13 eliminated the limitations on velocity? > The oldest standard I have on hand right now is 1999 and the limit on > velocity for fire sprinkler systems is not in there. > > _______________________________________________ Sprinklerforum mailing list [email protected] http://fireball.firesprinkler.org/mailman/listinfo/sprinklerforum For Technical Assistance, send an email to: [email protected] To Unsubscribe, send an email to:[email protected] (Put the word unsubscribe in the subject field)
