It can be crazy tough to visualize all the slopes on a roof with dormers and 
hips.  Here is one of the first exercises I have the students do in Semester 
One:
 
- Take a flat roof plan and turn it into a 3D model.  
- Cut the paper to scale for the slope.
- Tape together the pieces of paper so that you create a 3D model of the roof 
plan.
 
An elegant and primary exercise all at the same time!  I give the students a 
hard time about being back in Kindergarten with their "safety scissors" and 
tape.....  "Hey Mom, look what I made at college today!"
