Haven't we had this discussion before? Craig Prahl CH2MHILL/SPB 864-599-4102 ________________________________________ From: [email protected] [[email protected]] On Behalf Of Thom [[email protected]] Sent: Friday, October 22, 2010 5:02 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: Bolts, Nuts, Washers
Generally we are talking Standard SAE bolts. Bolts with unmarked heads are grade 1 thru 4, all of these bolts have a min. tensile strength of 60 ksi or more. (Kips per Sq. In. 1 Kip = 1000#) So even the lowest grade bolt will work for our purposes, since we are generally working with water, and not steam, and our system pressure is generally limited to less than 250# (175# for most applications.) For the bolts to pull apart (or stretch) on a std. 4" x 9" flange with 8-5/8 bolts, would take over 48,000# of force. (That works out to about 4,000 Psi of internal pressure.) I'm not implying it’s a good idea to use more pressure, because the bolts are not the weak point. That is why the spec. for bolts are based more upon corrosion resistance, plated, coated or some grade of S.S. more to protect them from whatever environment they are installed in, than on "Strength". Until the pressures get really high or the risk/loss gets up there, the bolts aren't the problem. (Nuke sub, power plant, rocket or space shuttle.) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ron Greenman Sent: Friday, October 22, 2010 12:27 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Bolts, Nuts, Washers Look at 9 and 10 in 13/2007. There's a lot of specifics applicable to some particular applications but for the most, as David said, parts is parts when it comes to general fasteners. I think the DoD guys know this and just want cut sheets marked with what fasteners you're going to use. Then if the designer says 1/2" thru bolts on a beam and the fitter installs 3/8" x 1" lags hammered in there's a paper trail and no room for argument.
