Update. I responded to Mr. Caputo by asking if it the intent to disregard 2002, 13:8.6.2.12 when determining the "Protection Area of Coverage." He replied "Negative. The sections you refer to provide spacing rules – providing the area of coverage for the sprinklers. The comment related to 11.2.3.5.2 (2) applies to the discharge flow rate which is usually taken as A x D = Q but in the case of small rooms, is technically s x l = A
I doubt anyone would complain or object if you applied the actual area of the room method to apply the density hydraulically. It’s a subtle nuance which is not addressed. I am fairly certain if a proposal were to be submitted to clarify this point, the discharge committee would agree that either method is acceptable. " So, another check in the winner's column and my faith has been restored! I did go that route... I instead received a response from Mr. Caputo with NFPA and he informed me that per 2002, "...the small rooms rule is not applicable to the design consideration for residential occupancies." Unless I am wrong, (which I frequently am) although he (Roland) is a committee member of the TCC for NFPA, he is with AFSA. Trust me, I would LOVE to get an "official" response from Mr. Huggins! How would I go about getting one from AFSA (i.e. Roland) ? But I do think I will forward some excerpts of this thread and see where that gets me. (probably nowhere that I want to be...) NFPA has an email accounts setup for all NFPA codes where you can submit questions and receive code interpretations and technical answers. The format is setup as [email protected]. Replace the # with the code you are inquiring about. For example, if you have a question related to the sprinkler code, you would submit your question to [email protected]. Then Roland can 'officially' respond.
