I was working on a project about 8 or 9 years ago where we looked
into this in lieu of attic sprinklers. I don't recall the
manufacturer we looked at, but it did become impractical real fast. I
would Google "intumescent paint" and see what come up.

Cost is not a factor, at least for now. 13 has specific requirements in
8.15.1.2.10. Are there any paints that satisfy these requirements. Would
appreciate to get names of any products.
Many claim their paints are UL listed as fire retardants, but 13 has more
specific requirements.
If anyone is familiar with this section of the code, have another question.
NFPA 13, 2010; 8.15.1.2.10 ".......extended for additional 20 minutes in the
form in which they are installed, shall not require sprinkler protection".
"In the form in which they are installed" must mean the material arranged in
the way it is installed. So for an engineered wood truss it must mean OSB at
different slopes. However, the ASTM E84 test specified by NFPA has the
material in horizontal position. Does anyone know what is meant?

Subject: RE: Fire Retardant Coating
There are intumescent paints which might do the trick, but they have to be
applied by specially trained painter and cost big bucks. Gyp board covering
all the wood would be cheaper.
