I seem to remember it being 3 feet below the roof for an exhaust duct as
well.
I looked back through all my older editions of NFPA 13 and could not find it
though.
I must have seen it in a local ordinance or something.
Did some net surfin and this is the best I could come up with from Lincoln
Fire Dept. in CA
(see Chapter 13.4,3.B ). It looks like their ammendment to the 2002-NFPA 13
sec. 13.4
It calls for the head to be located in the exhaust duct 6" above the roof
line.

Intake plenum? Do you mean exhaust plenum?

I had to flow heads in the pit, intake plenum, exhaust duct, etc. except
the mixing room when i used to design the spray booths for Blowtherm. That's
what the A.H.J. usually required. I was able to get a compromise with them
allowing me to use different orifice sizes in different areas of the booth
so as not to have to install a 6" riser for all the overage.

The duct or the spray booth? just figure all.

OK, but there are two items that I have heard of, but can't find a

vertical runs of duct.

Also, there is the nebulous statement "the water supply shall be sufficient
to supply all sprinklers likely to open in any one fire incident..." How
does one go about determining the number of sprinklers likely to open that
would be reasonable and satisfy the AHJ as well as the attorney for the
plaintiff?
