Is this how everyone else reads it? If the duct was larger, it would be like
a room. Or say a paint booth. If the paint booth which is part of the
exhaust system was 13' high, we will need two levels of sprinklers? I'm not
being sarcastic. Just trying to understand the code.

NFPA 33 2011 9.4.6 Sprinklers systems protecting stacks or ducts shall meet
all of the following requirements:
(1) Sprinklers shall be spaced no more than 12' apart.

Since the standard doesn't differentiate between vertical or horizontal duct
then I interpret it to require sprinklers to spaced 12' on the vertical as
well as horizontal.

Subject: Exhaust ducct

I normally provide one head at the top of a vertical exhaust stack coming
off a paint booth. The vertical duct is about 25 feet high. The booth
manufacturer says there should be two heads as maximum spacing on vertical
duct is 20 feet. Is this normal?
