See NFPA 25 Chapter 15. This covers pre-planned impairments and requires a coordinator that has been given authority to make decisions on the owner's behalf. It also requires the coordinator to notify all involved parties (ie. AHJ, insurers, fire dept, etc) and locate impairment tags throughout.

I would caution you that leaving sprinkler heads in place that no longer operate, in an "Occupied" building gives the false sense of protection, similar to just gluing heads to a ceiling without and pipe supplying them. I don't know how "Litigious" the Irish court system is in regard to "Public safety" but Old English law can't be much different than here, except that you have far fewer lawyers. I'd remove anything that say's or looks like a fire protection system, including heads, riser, FDC, signs and pipe if possible, but the AHJ should supply you with written guidelines for your files. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Damien Shannon Sent: Monday, March 07, 2011 4:39 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Decommissioning a system Dear Forum, I was wondering if there is a Standard or Datasheet that people are aware of for decommissioning a system. We are requested to decommission a few buildings here. Some are remaining open, some are closing. Some will be heated but some are not. One of my big concerns is that in some cases there are drywall/plaster ceilings, with drops to the heads. Therefore there will be water in the drops. Since the system would be left such that it would not be a sealed system, thereby allowing room for expansion during freeze periods, would there still be cause for concern of breakage/leakage? Some of the areas would be very difficult to remove every sprinkler (with severe floor obstructions.), and there may be areas with certain amount of misc trapped water. Has anyone got experience in this regards, or is there a Standard to be followed. Any help would be appreciated. BTW, I recently closed QED Sprinkler Designs to take a position back in the 'Homeland' with my Father's Company. (Believe we just became the first Irish AFSA memberJ). I had mentioned this move to a few of you before but there have been a few postponed starts which has led me to be in limbo for a while there. Thank you all for your help and encouragement while I was State side (it was a very special 16 years for me), and hope to keep in touch. Damien Shannon Provincial Sprinkler Company Ltd.
