It goes in the wall of the tank in the pump house where it is protected from freezing. The return line is then (or should be) piped up along the center support and discharges topside and pointed opposite the suction nozzle. Does same as you're thinking, but avoids the thing I saw year before last- an 8" OS&Y froze/broke cause the water was trapped and wasn't drained.
I may have mislead y'all inadvertently, having only had a chance to skim the article on my cel while at NFSA this weekend. I don't believe the pump was running. Might never know, I believe the pump was being replaced, or had just been replaced, and they'd just started filling recently. All my info is 2nd hand at best, and I was asked not to pass along everything. Imagine lawsuits, OSHA, etc. I just wanted to get the most of it out so folks are forewarned. Was more as an Alert than for Analysis. I'm sure the remains are being analyzed. George Church Rowe Sprinkler Systems, Inc. Of course the arrangement Frans described makes more sense once pointed out unless, of course, doing so causes tanks to rupture.
