Whoa!
Where does the 60 minute water duration come from?
It's not brought in from #13 on that short list that I see.
So you need the appropriate density for the 13R water supply duration-
Don't need no stinkin hose allowance in 13R
And you may be able to call the storage area OH 1 and .15.

Subject: RE: Attic storage design on a 13R system

Joel: It appears the first caveat is the biggest as far as reducing demand. Is
the attic going to be 500 sq.ft. or less, or will it be subdivided that way? If
so it appears you can have 4 heads at 0.2 density. At 60 minutes that should
keep you below 7,500 gallons, depending on the efficiency of the system (lack
of overage).

Subject: Attic storage design on a 13R system

I have a small building that's 3000 sq. feet designed as per NFPA 13R. but they
want to use the attic for a storage room and the water supply is a tank and
they need more water because the storage classification brings it up to
60 min.

My question is does this section of the code do any good and reduce the water
duration requirement?

6.7.2.2 The system demand of areas outside the dwelling unit shall be
permitted to be limited to the number of sprinklers in the compartmented area
but shall not be greater than the demand for a total of four sprinklers where
all of the following conditions are met:

(1) The area is compartmented into areas of 500 ft2 (46 m2) or less
by 30-minute fire-rated construction.

(2) The area is protected by quick-response or residential
sprinklers not exceeding 130 ft2 (12 m2) per sprinkler for ordinary hazard,
225 ft2 (20.9 m2) for light hazard, or the allowable coverage of the sprinkler
listing.

(3) Openings have a lintel at least 8 in. (203 mm) in depth.

(4) The total area of openings does not exceed 50 ft2 (4.6 m2) for
each compartment.

(5) Discharge densities are in accordance with NFPA 13, Standard
for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems.
