Jim-
Thanks for the input, does make sense. Have you ever ran across that
situation where the line running into the room needs to be dry?

Brian,

I was once told by an elevator inspector and another consultant in
California that they preferred having elevator power shut off (shunt trip)
by heat detectors rated at less than sprinkler operation because it
minimizes the chance of accidental shutdown due to waterflow surges,
testing, etc. It made sense to me.

Since that time it has saved a lot of trouble.

Jim

Understood, however I've seen it used before for this application, right or
wrong. Reading through NFPA-72 seems like the preferred method is a flow
switch that shuts off power instead. Just curious what other people use
when
the owner doesn't want any water in the pipe inside the room unless the
heat
detector trips if you can't use a solenoid?

A solenoid valve by itself is not listed or approved as a controllong valve
for sprinkler systems. They are listed for fire protection service as a
releasing device for deluge valves used for deluge or preaction
applications. It may be used as such when integrally installed as part of
an
assembly meeting the deluge valve laboratory standards.

Does anybody have a nice detail of a solenoid (pre-action) detail used in
elevator equipment rooms they'd be interested in sharing?

Thanks!
