Mark,

What is the nature of the construction of the 5-sided container? (metal? Wire,
plate, open frame?) Also, what is a ' 3 1/2" DAT'? Are the container stacks in
single/double/multiple rows?

I am not familiar with this sort of storage facility.

Top of our racks are 46'-8" and the deck (ceiling/top of steel) is at
54'-4" so that seems to be out of reach for the K25's. Also should
mention that the owners/arch would like it to be protected with a
pre-action system.

On the buildings that you installed in racks, what section of the code
did you use to place your sprinklers/piping? These racks are just a
bunch of 5 sided non-com containers that hold books for the library and
there is only 1" of space between the top of one container and the
bottom of the container above it. Every 4-8 of these containers there
is a 3-1/2" DAT. NFPA does not really call out anything for this type
of rack so right now I'm looking at section 16.3 (NFPA 13 2010) for
class 1-4 commodities stored in racks over 25'-0".

Sounds like you could use the Reliable K25 ESFR at the roof, it is good
to 48 ft. Just be careful that you have the 36" clear from top of
storage to the sprinkler. I don't see why you would need inrack
sprinklers.

We have done many ASRS buildings but they have all been 80-110 ft. high
so we had to use inracks.

Has anyone had any experience with ASRS racks? I have a 46'-0" tall
ASRS and we are trying to figure out the correct way to protect this.
Sent info to NFPA for an informal interpretation and not much help there
and also talked with some FM people and the best they could come up with
is that they think it needs in-racks but could not point to an
acceptable table or figure for placement of said sprinklers. The rack
manufacturer has done almost 20 of these racks and has not had in-racks
installed.

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.
