Todd -

I remember back in the 70's that the practice was to replace a
conventional head with an ssp pendent head in the upright position. Maybe
that's what you ran into? What's the year on the head? Should be marked on the 'pill'
or deflector.

If it is a conventional head, it is unlike the others I am familiar with. The diameter, tine to tine, is 1-1/2". The tines are straight out, as they would be for a pendent sprinkler. However, the material that was between the tines has been bent down, pointing towards the base of the sprinkler. Installed, it looks like a pendent sprinkler in the upright position (which is what I told the owner and Fire Marshal)

I have contacted Reliable, but have not heard back from them yet. These are installed under a variety of flat ceilings in a school building. I am going to be making the recommendation to replace all of the heads and want to make sure that there is nothing I need to know about first
