I did a 20 lb cylinder filling station once, indoors, 100's of bottles. The
main supply was outdoors and away from the building. I found densities
someplace that weren't nearly as much as I would have expected. There was also
discussion saying it's about cooling the adjacent tanks. I'm thinking FM?
Maybe 0.3/3000? I agree with Craig you don't put the fire out. But it really
doesn't take a lot of water to keep a tank cool so it doesn't bleve. Dry
system at the right density I don't see an inherent problem with.

I think they are being a tad bit naïve.

They will be storing propane tanks and dispensing them from this open canopy
that is remotely located on site. What type of tanks, I do not know at this
time. I am under the impression they will be the size of medical gas tanks.

The canopy appears to be 3500 sq.ft.

I have not been given a criteria, it appears they are wanting me to define what
they will be required to do per NFPA. I am currently reading through NFPA 59,
Utility LP-Gas Plants.

The architect has obviously never seen a propane fire.

How big is the canopy and what all is placed beneath it, just some pumps?

Typically with propane or other flammable gases, you spray water (hydrants and
hoses) to cool the vessel and adjacent vessels and let it burn itself out. The
value of providing sprinklers in such an installation is
questionable. What design criteria has been specified?

Subject: Sprinkling a Covered Propane Filling Station

This is my first time posting here and I am hoping to get some guidance.
This project is based on NFPA 2007.

I am currently designing a system to provide coverage to a local Propane
supplier. They have a remote covered filling station. There will be propane
pumps under the awning and there is a nearby tank. This is a first for me.
The Architect has provided a room for a dry pipe riser and they are under
the assumption that we should be able to provide dry pipe system and heads
for coverage. I am not so sure that is going to be the case. Has anybody
done something like this?

Thank You ,
