I don't think you are off at all, there is just nothing in the code that 
requires fittings be installed based on accessibility. Whether or not it's a 
firewall should be the only issue, but the way you worded it, they built the 
wall/soffit after the fact to hide the coupling. So it obviously isn't a 
firewall.

Your example of the accessibility of the fitting being the same as if it were
