So would a control valve be required on the standpipe riser if I had a
separate riser for the parking garage that did not come off the
standpipe bulk?

The way I see it, you will have a single Combined System. So you will
still need a main system riser, with whatever bells and whistles are
appropriate, but you can have a single PIV/FDC (or Backflow) assembly as
the main control manifold, or a main building system riser that includes
those components. But the way you're describing it, the parking
sprinklers are a floor system just like the residential floors above,
that takes off from the bulk main, downstream of the main system riser.

Thanks Steve
Nothing to prevent taking the parking system off the standpipe bulk and
when you pump into the FDC you will be able to charge every system.
Some AHJ's up here call the standpipe bulk riser a "sprinkler" riser and
require the additional control valve at the riser per 13. I just wanted
to check if I have been doing it right all these years when I omit the
control valve at the riser.

If I understand it correctly, you have a service entry to the building,
then a split between a standpipe bulk main and an individually valved
basement sprinkler system. Then you supply 3 standpipes and one of
those will be a combined riser serving standpipes and sprinklers. And
you want to connect the FDC to the bulk main. If that's the scenario
...

6.3.2 requires that you have an isolation valve for each standpipe
riser, and you will have a control valve on the parking garage system.
The FDC will be pumping through four control valves on the mains (not
counting upper floor sectionals), but if one of them is closed, the FD
will still be able to pump to the other portions of the system. I am
pretty sure there's nothing in the standard that precludes this, so long
as you're not proposing to arrange the FDC tie-in downstream of one of
the three riser sectionals.

To keep it schematically typical per floor, is there any reason why you
can't take the parking sprinklers off of the same standpipe that is
supplying the upper floor sprinklers, with the POC downstream of the
valve required by 6.3.2?

The foregoing is my opinion only and does not necessarily represent the
opinion or intent of the NFPA 14 Technical Committee on Standpipe and
Hose Systems.

Subject: Standpipe question - control valve

Scenario.....

Typical parking garage / residential building with 3 stairwells which
require standpipe protection.

One controlled system for the parking garage and one bulk riser to the
standpipes. Each stairwell standpipe will have individual isolation
control valves and the individual residential floors will be zoned off
the standpipes. Does a control valve need to be installed on the
standpipe bulk run riser? Would like to use the bulk pipe as part of
the FDC piping to save some money.
