This is more an issue on the protection of Storage where the old protection approach with just 1/2" and 17/32" was marginally at best. We literally wetted the SURROUNDING combustibles and let the fire burn itself out (while attempting to minimize the damage to steel over the fire). Compared to today's performance with bigger K-factors, tis would be a failure.

James and I did an article on this in the Feb 2010 issue of Sprinkler Age.

Maybe I should have said "much" instead of "most", my point was simply that evaporative cooling of the fire area is a physical function of the extinguishment process. And your point is well made that pre-wetting is a significant part of the control function. Where in the world is Scot Deal these days?

Pre-wetting is only a marginalized part of sprinkler control?
Less than half of a sprinkler's water hits the floor as liquid?
