Monitor nozzles are designed at specific points such as 500 gpm at 100 psi nozzle pressure (Minimum flow is 250 gpm per NFPA 24(2010) Section 9.1). Each manufacture should have throw and reach data to support their nozzle. The furthest distance the nozzle needs to throw must be less than that of the maximum throw attainable. The monitor needs to be located far enough away that the operator is not subjected to dangerous levels of heat flux from a fire in the protected equipment in order to operate. Is the monitor standalone or connected to a hydrant? Many monitors are mounted on hydrants in the petrochemical industry. Hydrant distances are recommended to be 50 ft minimum per API RP 2001 Section 6.2.4. API STD 2510 Section 10.3.2.3.3 also gives 50 ft from the vessel as the minimum distance the actuating valve can be located for a water spray system. Monitors normally have the intrinsic valves or valves immediately adjacent to their location which operate them requiring personnel to at least approach them. Storage vessels need to be reachable from at least two directions with three streams which each use less than 300 ft of hose per API STD 2510 Section 10.3.1.7. Minimum wetting densities may need to be achieved on exposed vessel surface or expected pool fire diameters. The entire vessel surface must be reachable with monitor streams per API STD 2510 Section 10.3.2.2.1 and must be accessible during a fire per Section 10.3.2.2.3. Is the location in an area where freezing is possible? What is the prevailing wind direction? What is the size of the vessel? Exposed vessel surface area? What is the area of the containment around the protected tank? May foam be used with the monitor to deliver a barrier on the surface of a pool fire?
These and many more questions need to be answered to provide the proper equipment at the optimal locations for your scenario. Further analysis by an experienced fire protection engineer is warranted. Their question to me is how far away from the tank? I have looked through Guardian Equipment data sheets but cannot locate a throw chart to determine distance. How have you positioned these?
