The current edition of the standard is (finally) in line with the
building code, and both favor the floor landing in lieu of
intermediates. Both also say that the fire official may require the
intermediates, and some still do. For several cycles, 14 and the
building code, going back to the Uniform model, were not in synch and
several of the changes made to 14 in the past two cycles were intended
solely to harmonize the two. I agree with Todd that you should direct
this question to the responding fire department, asking them to confirm
the intermediate landing or offering the floor landing as a simplified
alternative. If they want the intermediates, and there is more than one
between floors, I have resolved this on at least two previous projects
by putting them at the landing closest to the higher of the two floors
between which they occur. But the serving FD should have the
overarching say on this one.

The foregoing is my opinion only and does not necessarily represent the
opinion or intent of the NFPA 14 Technical Committee on Standpipe and
Hose Systems.

Subject: Hose Valves

Esteemed Colleagues,

NFPA 14 (2003, Edition) 7.3.2 (1) Class I Standpipe Locations.

Tells me I need a hose valve at each intermediate landing in every
required stairway. Simple enough.

What if I have 2 intermediate landings between floors? Do I need a hose
valve at each?

Thanks,

David Autry
