No to your first question, Yes to your last. :-) Remember 8.6.4.1.2 (3) requires you within 1"-12" of the ceiling/deck when installed the way you describe. That measurement, coupled with the dimension, seems to supersede any concerns of height vs. distance for obstructions to me.

Since the sprinklers lines would be 4'-6 o.c. I am o.k. there, so can I ignore the 4" bottom flange since I can not spray under it?
