Thank you for all of your replies. With these studies, the testing was
performed in a warehouse with storage. In these scenarios, the performance is
quite specific. With my project, an open 40' high mall concept, the AHJ is
asking what affect the fans will have on the performance not only of the fire
sprinkler activation, but the heat and smoke detectors as well.

Thank you,

Subject: RE: HVLS Fans

I am dealing with this right now on a car dealership (service area). The
research conducted won an award in 2012. It is all still new and making its way
into the codes now. Bottom line, sprinklers will work and not be obstructed,
but the fan needs to be shut down within 90 seconds. Some have this built in
others may not. The only thing I could think of if not is a shunt trip like we
use in elevators.
Here is a video from a leading expert that helps...

No, but it makes sense to turn them off upon smoke detection so that they allow
the smoke to collect and stay up near the roof away from the public.
An air sampling smoke detection manufacturer claims their detector is built
into BA fans for this purpose, but that seems like a bad idea for maintenance
reasons. If it is a basketball gym then make sure the fans are structuraly
decoupled from the basketball goals. That might be very hard to do. Gym roof
are light. Otherwise you'll be getting a call from the owner about the hoops
vibrating with the fans.
