As such, you have to resolve 14:6.1.2.2 that requires mains etc to be protected with fire rated construction equivalent to that of the stairwells. Then 6.1.2.2.1 allows the mains in sprinklered buildings to be unprotected. So going through an unprotected portion of the building kicks you back to protected with rated construction. There have been equivalencies granted whereby the main is protected with a row of sprinklers (typically installed on the main itself). Thats a call by the AHJ.
