The seemingly minor requirement to install automatic fire sprinklers in
elevator shafts has snowballed into a real regulatory horror story, with little
actual benefit.  Because the sprinklers are there, additional requirements from
the elevator, plumbing and environmental sectors.  We should just eliminate the
requirement for sprinklers.

The elevator code A 17 requires shunt trip shutdown prior to water discharge on
the car or machinery. It causes all sorts of problems including opening on a
floor that is on fire. It allows switches or detectors.

Hello Greg,

There is an ATSM code for elevators (I forget the number), If that is adopted
in Alabama then it is in there. Itis adopted here and we have to do that for
any heads in the shaft.
