There is a very, very, very small amount of situations where you need to
calculate the high sprinkler heads with the low sprinkler heads (under the
mezzanine).

If there is a large opening to the floor above, it would depend on how it
is zoned. If the they are the same zone then you may need one (which is
the case a lot of times because of fire alarms). If they are 2 different
zones, then no you wouldn't need a calculation. Be careful about large
openings in the floor above, usually you need a water curtain around those
(unless a shaft enclosure is not required and sprinklers are not what's
keeping it from being required).

You would not need to calculate the sprinkler obstructions with the high
sprinklers unless specifically instructed to do so by a code section. You
may need to run a calculation with the low sprinklers and the sprinkler
heads under the obstructions. This of course really depends on the height
differences, layout, number of sprinklers, etc.

Subject: Sprinklers under mezzanine

Gentlemen,

NFPA 13 par. 23.4.4.6.3 states:
The requirements of 23.4.4.6.1.1 to include every sprinkler in the design
area shall not apply where spray sprin- klers or CMSA sprinklers are
provided above and below ob- structions such as wide ducts or tables.

Question:
Does the same apply to sprinklers underneath mezzanines?

And how about sprinklers under a floor with a large opening to the
(sprinklered) floor above?

And how when the large opening is filled with obstructions (pipe
rack) with additional sprinklers underneath the obstructions?

Looking forward to your insight....

Best regards,
