Hi Chris, thanks. No, not a typo. I cannot remember how I was exposed to the
rumor, but it seems like in the early '90s I heard, in the future I would
not be using for example, NFPA 13 and UBC, but one combined Standard called
NFPA 5000. I should know better than to post hearsay, here anyway since I do
not expect any 'back-up' (i.e. "I think years ago, for a very brief time,
Potter Roemer had a listed heat collector"). Just call me casterwhine :)

Subject: NFPA 5000 Clarification

I'll assume a typo on the 25 years. "The inaugural 2003 edition of NFPA
5000®, Building Construction and Safety Code®, was issued in 2002 and was
the first model building code developed using the full open consensus–based
procedures accredited by the American National Standards Institute."

This was a political decision with the breakup of the ICC/NFPA partnership a
few years before that. I've been doing this for about 25 years and have
never heard of combining fire and building codes. They serve two different
purposes.

Building code covers new construction. Fire code covers existing conditions
and process hazards. That's how I'd sum it up if limited to two short
sentences.
