The exception I remember for participant sport areas was in 903 of the IBC. From the 2006 IBC section 903.2.1.4 indicated when sprinklers were required for A-4 occupancy, and the exception allowed areas used exclusively for participant sports when the main floor area was at the level of exit discharge to not be sprinklered. This exception was eliminated in the 2009 code, and still appears to be gone from the 2012. That's not to say that a local amendment or other adoption practice hasn't put it back in your case, but it is gone from the model code.
