NFPA 13 (2013) 11.1.6.4 For partially sprinklered buildings, the sprinkler demand, not including hose stream allowance, as indicated in Figure 11.2.3.1.1 shall be added to the requirements given in NFPA 14.

THERE ARE 8 ITEMS LISTED, BUT I REMOVED THE OTHERS FOR THE SAKE OF THIS DISCUSSION. A.8.1.1 This standard contemplates full sprinkler protection for all areas including walk-in coolers, freezers, bank vaults, and similar areas. Other NFPA standards that mandate sprinkler installation might not require sprinklers in certain areas. Based upon experience and testing, sprinklers have been found to be effective and necessary at heights in excess of 50 ft (15.2 m). For a building to meet the intended level of protection afforded by NFPA13, sprinklers must not be omitted from such high ceiling spaces. The requirements of this standard should be used insofar as they are applicable. The authority having jurisdiction should be consulted in each case. A building is considered sprinklered throughout when protected in accordance with the requirements of this standard. I had thought that as long as the CODE (ie Building or Life Safety) acknowledged the building as fully sprinklered, then NFPA 13 would also. If it is considered partially sprinklered, then: A8.1 Water supplies for partial systems should be designed with consideration to the fact that in a partial system more sprinklers might be opened in a fire that originates in an unprotected area and spreads to the sprinklered area than would be the case in a completely protected building. Fire originating in a nonsprinklered area might overpower the partial sprinkler system. The Architectural team has decided that anything "participant sport" related is to be NOT sprinklered. This allows for a large portion of the building to remain unprotected. I wanted to know if the NFPA 13 had special considerations for situations where a building is partial sprinklered that others on the forum may have made consideration of. thanks -----Original Message----- From: Sprinklerforum [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Chris Born Sent: Wednesday, August 06, 2014 6:15 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Special considerations for partially sprinklered buildings The exception I remember for participant sport areas was in 903 of the IBC. >From the 2006 IBC section 903.2.1.4 indicated when sprinklers were required >for A-4 occupancy, and the exception allowed areas used exclusively for >participant sports when the main floor area was at the level of exit discharge >to not be sprinklered.
