It is not the AHJ not adopting the NFPA standards, but the Building Code not adopting the latest standard. There are some building codes that adopt the "current standard" whereas others adopt a standard of a specific year of issue. You just have to live with it. In any case, not all changes are more stringent. For example, NFPA 13R used to require a 15 minute thermal barrier in washrooms to be not sprinklered. But the current standards deleted this requirement making it less stringent. There are so many other such less stringent changes. Then, old-timers will remember how the three OH groups were re-grouped into two, reducing some densities, and increasing some. Whe ther they do it or not, the Building Code Committee is responsible for reviewing the standards they adopt, prior to issuing a building code.

How does the forum feel about ignoring the more stringent requirements of the most current NFPA standards all because the AHJ hasn't adopted the latest year? As the standards have evolved with each new addition, they typically try to clarify murky wording of past standards, expand on topics, or add/change requirements based on the latest and greatest tests. So should we be purposely designing and installing and inferior product that more times than not is less safe just because the AHJ hasn't adopted the latest design guidelines. I've heard sometimes the AHJ doesn't adopt the new standard simply due to the financial impact of republishing their amendments and not merely because they don't agree. To me it seems morally/ethically wrong but I may just be on my high horse today. Thoughts?
