I have an older building I looked at a month ago for a standpipe test, 5
year test. Never been tested I'm told and I believe them. No they want it
done to satisfy fire inspector.
High rise with pump, 1990 installation. Researched applicable building code
and printed it, applicable edition of 14 (1989) and downloaded it. 500@65
plus 250, etc. 3) 6" standpipes. My question is when I reviewed the past 3
years pump tests which are all over the place (ever hear of calibrated
equipment?) but pretty consistently the pump (750@85, 130# on riser) runs
out of water (or dips to +/-15 psi suction at 900 GPM or so). Poor water
supply. (Also possible poor pump selection.) When we test pumps with this
condition, as long as we can make 100% it's allowable to run out as far as
we can without diverging or possibly cavitating the supply. Would you guys
apply the same theory to a standpipe test?

Tom

I did a new mid-rise on the same street a few years ago when commissioning
and we had to series pump through two engines to get 100 PSI. Lousy water.
Went 2 blocks to pickup a larger main.
