This is for a freezer storage area in a food manufacturing plant. They
originally specified stainless steel ATR with no more than 3in of thread
showing but accepted galvanized ATR instead since the piping is
galvanized. They won't allow ATR with any kind of plastic coating on it.
Unfortunately, I have yet to find a supplier of smooth rod stock that is
pre-galvanized and this job is a rush so I may have to go with stainless
anyways.

In a clean room/food processing application I've had to use slick
stainless rod, threaded on site & they allowed no visible threads showing
(so dust couldn't collect on the ATR threads).
However, the system was exposed. So dust could collect on the pipe &
Sprinklers.

We use to install rod covers, plastic sleeve that you cut for the length
of the rod.

In the GMP (food and pharma) world at least it's for cleanliness. They
want everything to be wipe-down ready as much as possible. Less little
threads in the rod, less places for dust (including dangerous chemical
dust) to accumulate and later have to be cleaned off.

I'm chuckling thinking of the logic behind this. They want only the last
three inches threaded presumably because it weakens the rod (determined
from that old school where the rod was site threaded and threading too
much was a waste of time and not a strength issue). They want galvanized
or cadmium rod presumably for corrosion protection. But now the suspected
weakest part has had the plating cut through so not only is it weaker than
the rest of the rod but also sans protection. And somehow this is better
than ATR plated or dipped after threading. I wonder if someone will pull
cold galving it after the fact. Or tar.
